Elementary Math Resources for Parents

Pleasanton Math Teacher, Duane Habecker, has created tutorial videos on YouTube for each module in the Eureka Math series grades 1-5.

What is Common Core?

Our students just took the Smarter Balanced Assessments, the tests that measure learning under Common Core. Common Core is a set of academic standards, or learning goals, for math and English that define what our students should know and be able to do at the end of each school year. For example, by the end of third grade, our kids should be able to measure and estimate weights of liquid and solve word problems using those quantities. You can read the standards below or here.

The standards were developed based on education research and proven best practices from schools in California and across the country. They are designed to promote critical thinking and help ensure that our students graduate with the skills they need to be ready for the future. However, Common Core doesn't dictate the curriculum or lesson plans — our teachers and school leaders still make those decisions. Read more at the Common Core website, the California State PTA siteThe California Department of Education and Embrace the Core.

How were the standards developed?

The Common Core Standards were developed by a group of teachers, state governors and education leaders from 48 states. This group first came together in 2009 to establish learning goals based on education research and existing best practices with a proven track record of student success. State participation in the development process was voluntary, and so was the decision to adopt the standards here in California in 2010.

NEW CALIFORNIA STATE STANDARDS (COMMON CORE)

The Common Core standards clearly communicate what is expected of students at each grade level. This will allow our teachers to be better equipped to know exactly what they need to help students learn and establish individualized benchmarks for them. The Common Core State Standards focus on core conceptual understandings and procedures starting in the early grades, thus enabling teachers to take the time needed to teach core concepts and procedures well—and to give students the opportunity to master them.

Brochures Help Explain California's Common Core Standards

What kinds of things will my child learn in mathematics and English language arts in first grade? In high school? New brochures focused on the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy help teachers and other educators answer such questions. The eight new brochures, four in each subject area, are organized by grade spans (K–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12) and provide insights into what students will be learning.

The brochures on the mathematics standards showcase example problems, and the brochures on the ELA/Literacy standards highlight the progression of learning through the grade levels. Each brochure also provides suggestions for parents/guardians to support their students’ learning and a list of additional resources.

The brochures can be downloaded from the Sacramento County Office of Education Web page individually:

  • English Language Arts/Literacy
  • Mathematics

The brochures were developed on behalf of the Consortium for the Implementation of the Common Core under the leadership of the Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division of the California Department of Education and the Sacramento County Office of Education. For the best visual presentation, the brochures are designed to be printed two sided (flipped on the short edge) and then folded into thirds.

Parent Common Core Road Maps

Road maps help parents understand how to support their child language arts and mathematics. Each road map lets parents know what their child will learn, how to partner with the teacher, provides examples of skills and strategies students will use and how to ensure learning continues outside of school. These road maps come from the Council of the Great City Schools.

PTA Parent Guides to Student Success

The Parents’ Guide to Student Success (listed below in English and Spanish) was developed in response to the Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics that more than 45 states have adopted. Created by teachers, parents, education experts, and others from across the country, the standards provide clear, consistent expectations for what students should be learning at each grade in order to be prepared for college and career.
